In order to edit videos you must have Avidemux installed:

Run Avidemux from: Applications > Sound & Video > Avidemux (GTK+)

To start editing a video choose the open button to bring up the open dialogue.

Locate and open the video you wish to edit.

If you are asked if you want to build a VBR time map click Build Time Map.

Once the video is open you can use the slider and arrow keys to track through your video and find the section you want. If there aren't many keyframes in the video the slider won't be very precise and you'll have more luck refining sections with the arrow keys.

To cut out sections of the video select where you want to start removing and press the button with the filmstrip labled A.

Then find the end of the section to be removed and press the button labled B.

Go to the edit menu and select cut. This will remove your selection.

Limited effects can be achieved with the filters found in the Filters dialogue brought up via Video > Filters.

When you are finished editing your video click the save button and save it with the save dialogue.

If you are told you may need smart copy, enable it.

And choose the default Q factor value.
